TRACK DESCRIPTIONS

  • 1. GO CLIMB

Lori’s most upbeat and driving song on the album, this poppy folk tune is a compact and optimistic pep talk - encouraging us to move forward, take chances and go after what you want, "trust yourself and go for it!"

  • 2. COULD BE GOOD

A foot stomping, quirky contemporary folk song that starts with a strong and hopeful drum beat from Toronto's Steven Foster. There is always a time inside our grief where things start to feel better, that beginning of healing when things could be good.

  • 3. IT'S ALL LOVE

An easy listening contemporary pop song with a RnB folk flavour. Tom Gill (Queer Songbook Orchestra) adds his beautiful voice to the song. After years of wishing on the moon to become a mother it finally happens for Lori. Friend and collaborator Ron Sexsmith helps Cullen find a simple chorus to create this universal feeling about what everyone wants, love.

  • 4. GET WHAT YOU LIKE

Contemporary folk tune co-written with Lori's dear friend Jennifer Foster. In this song in particular we can really hear how Thom Gill’s (Martha Wainwright, BERNICE) groovy tasteful guitar add to the sound of the record. "Knowing yourself and what works for you is not always easy but when you can find it, trust it and you might just get what you like."

  • 5. HARD RUN

Jazzy, RnB fused folk tune which features Michelle Willis (David Crosby Band, Snarky Puppy), who brings complex and uplifting vocal arrangements, with a voice that simply makes one feel better. When a Hard Run ends it is often because someone came to help. This song gives us hope that with enough support and some eventual good news the tough times will recede.

  • 6. LIGHT IS UP

Acoustic folk song about remembering that moment when something is born. The huge sense of relief and release as you can hold and see the light in a way you never have before. The is the kind of song that comes through an artist rather than being laboured over. Accompanied by a video by friend Hugh Marsh.

  • 7. ANYMORE OR ANYLESS

A lush ballad with an orchestral arrangement by Grammy nominated Drew Jurecka (DUA LIPA). Written like a picture book, Drew's string arrangement on Lori's tender melody brings the listener to a place of complex beauty as one remembers the wonder and joy of childhood.

  • 8. INTERRUPTED TIME

Simple, reflective acoustic ballad about taking on the weight of the world for children. About how we try to keep the balance of our tightly held protectiveness against the challenging knowledge that we are always preparing to let them go.

  • 9. BE HERE NOW

An acoustic contemporary folk ballad about loss. There is a great feeling and presence of the moment that happens when someone we love dies. We would do anything to hold on to them one last time. We come into those inexplicable moments in a way that almost feels other worldly. Thom Gill joins Lori to create comforting vocals, to soothe broken hearts.

  • 10. ACROSS THE WATER

A heartbreaking acoustic ballad that brings the listener in the room as a mother loses her child. A mature song that does not shy away from the life altering loss.

ABOUT BLOOD WONDER

Juno-nominated vocalist Lori Cullen delivers ten original contemporary folk songs with a pure, unaffected style. BLOOD WONDER tells the story of Lori's intimate journey of motherhood. Of her longing to be a mother, the loss of failed pregnancies, the pain of a stillbirth, the birth of her son and the joy that motherhood now brings. The optimistic and hopeful songs were composed with Lori's guitar and voice and include two co-writes with friends Ron Sexsmith and Jennifer Foster. Co-produced by her dear friend Chris Gartner, it features lush strings by Grammy-nominated arranger Drew Jurecka and additional vocals by Michelle Willis and Thom Gill.

Unforced, unfiltered and exceptionally intimate, Lori Cullen's aerial voice has been called “one of the purest of a generation”. She is a searingly direct and authentically driven artist and in her eight albums she’s taken chances every time. Lori's career began in the late 90's in Toronto's singer/songwriter circuit where she effortlessly cultivated a loyal fan base with her unique hybrid of folk, pop and jazz. She is known for her songwriting and unique song interpretations across genres and has been identified as one of the luminary jazz giant Kurt Elling's "new favourite singers."
